Christmas Gift Guide | The Home Bird

ORGANIC AROMAS DIFFUSER*, ORGANIC AROMAS ESSSENTIALS OILS*, IKEA CUSHION, GEO-FLEUR GIFT CARD, HATLEY PYJAMA BOTTOMS

Hello and Happy December 1st! I’m kicking off my Christmas content with some much-loved gift guides, covering different hobbies and interests over the next five days and hopefully giving you some great present ideas, so let’s get cracking!

We all know someone who takes pride in their home, who prefers a snuggly night in to a wild night out or who drools over all the interior design #goals on Pinterest and today’s Christmas gift guide is for them. Having recently decorated and furnished my new flat, I have been doing all of the above so gifts for the home have certainly been on this home bird’s mind of late.

There is nothing better than getting back from a long day at work, slipping into your “comfies” and snuggling on the sofa in front of Netflix. For nights like these, I love popping on my diffuser by ORGANIC AROMAS. With its elegant design, colourful changing lights and beautifully smelling essential oils, the Organic Aromas diffuser creates the perfect ambiance in which to relax. Also, if you are staying in, there is no reason why you can’t look incredible and I like to make a statement with some graphic print pyjama bottoms, like these super cute and festive moose ones from Canadian brand, HATLEY, or a satin star print set from ASOS.
Moving on from creating the perfect night in, let’s talk about aesthetics! I have become a cushion obsessive recently and my current favourite has to be this big, grey velvet one from IKEA. I love the texture that the fabric brings to our sofa and you can pretty much guarantee that the grey tone will go with any home’s colour palette! And finally it would not be an interior post without a bit of plant talk! I was recently introduced to a company called GEO-FLEUR that offers monthly plant delivery subscriptions and quirky botanical workshops and I think this is just such a lovely idea for a Christmas present!

See you tomorrow for day two of my Christmas gift guides!

Daytime Metallica

Dress – vintage (SIMILAR & SIMILAR), Jumper – handmade (SIMILAR), Coat – vintage (SIMILAR), Tights – H&M (in store), Boots – old CLARKS (SIMILAR), Beret – TOPSHOP
Location: Square Saint-Louis, Montréal
December starts in just a few days, which means festive season is officially upon us – hooray! I absolutely love this time of year, from the great food (how am I going to get hold of mince pies in Canada?!), beautiful light displays and the smell of Christmas trees to snuggly nights in and, of course, festive fashion. Although I wear metallics all year round, I especially love the excuse to get my sparkle on at this time of year so I thought it was about time to share a silvery outfit, which I am absolutely loving.
I hope that this outfit shows those of you that are a little wary about wearing metallics outside an actual party, that it is totally possible to make glittery pieces work in your daytime wardrobe. I love the slouchy look of this outfit, which is exactly how to nail sparkly dressing during the day – no figure-hugging pieces, please, and my favourite knit helps to really dress down this incredible blue toned silver pleated dress that I bought a few years ago. How satisfying is it when you find something in your wardrobe that is so on trend?
I finished off the look with my snuggly, chunky black boots and some totally not weather appropriate fishnet tights – my legs were completely numb after this little outing on Saturday but I am just not into the “look” of proper tights right now. Oh and let’s not forget everyone’s favourite hat – the beret, which completes the outfit just perfectly.
How are you wearing metallics this season?

My Slouchy Knitwear And Jeans Go-To

Jeans – GAP, Jumper – homemade, Burberry trench – vintage (SIMILAR), Hat – vintage (SIMILAR), Trainers – CONVERSE
Location: Outremont, Montreal
As the first snow falls over Montreal, I think it is safe to say that this is one of the last times that I can get away with comfortably wearing Converse and a trench coat. As I have been working in a vintage shop that requires a lot of “getting stuck in”, I have got used to wearing lots of slouchy jeans and jumper combos with comfy shoes on my feet and this seems to have crept into my weekend wardrobe too.
For a final autumnal walk through Outremont on Saturday, I went for my favourite new Gap jeans – which you have already seen in last MONDAY’S POST – and this unique denim jumper that my grandma knitted for me and I love oh so much. I find that it can be tricky to find the right balance of tight and slouchy in a knitwear and jeans look but I think this outfit gets it just right thanks to the straight (and not boyfriend) shape of the jeans and the long length of the knit. I love the androgynous vibe of this outfit, which is finished off perfectly with my beloved oversized vintage Burberry trench coat, falling apart Converse and a baker boy hat.
I hope you like this slouchy look as much as I do. If I am honest, I have been feeling quite uninspired recently, not knowing what to buy or invest in for my first Canadian winter and this has certainly affected my content – so I am sorry. And November is a bit sucky anyway but I am super excited for December, the festive season and all the Christmassy content I have planned that is coming your way very soon! As much as I love a good knitwear and jeans combo, I can’t wait to start getting a bit more dolled up in the next month or so.

The Perfect Match

Jumper – ZARA, Shirt – old H&M, Jeans – GAP, Coat – vintage (SIMILAR), Boots – OFFICE
Location: Mile End, Montreal
Fashion is a funny thing. Sometimes I can struggle to create interesting combinations and other times an outfit can come together as if by fate. Well that is exactly what happened with this one and there is nothing more satisfying than finding some pieces that work so perfectly together. After weeks of being surrounded by vintage clothes at work I had a sudden craving to hit the high street to buy something new, something easy to find and something more expensive. As much as I love vintage and thrift shopping (as discussed in last Monday’s BARGAIN POST), it is certainly important to get out of that vintage bubble from time to time and see what the high street has to offer. Gap, which is not somewhere that I normally shop, and Zara, which I am obsessed with, came up absolute trumps and I am so excited to share this outfit.
I have been wanting some of Gap’s light blue straight leg jeans for ages and often when I obsess over something in particular for so long, it ends up being a disappointment, but not these jeans. They are so comfortable, the length is perfect and the wash goes beautifully with this silver or “metallic grey” knit. I have been looking for a soft, velvet nineties style jumper like this and after seeing a few misshapen ones in vintage shops, Zara answered my prayers by offering not one but three versions of this knit (and yes I totally bought the rich gold version too!).
I thought that if I was going to buy a super trend-based piece, it might as well be jumper that will keep me warm and on trend during the harsh and imminent Canadian winter. I love the knit’s cropped length and it looks great layered over a crisp white shirt for the perfect clash of textures and styles. The velvet fabric means there are different tones of grey and silver running through the jumper which allows you to dress it up or down depending on your mood! Today I am embracing the silver with the addition of my favourite silver boots, which also look so good with the light wash of these jeans, and tying everything together with that blue faux fur coat whose teddy bear material adds another welcome element to this total mishmash of textures. I am absolutely loving this outfit, especially how it came together so naturally, and I cannot wait to wear this knit through party season too!
I hope you have a great day and let me know what you’re loving on the high street right now!
