La Vie Parisienne

Blazer – vintage / Disco leggings – American Apparel / Boots – Dune (old) / Fur scarf – Topshop (old) / Bag – Longchamp / Socks – Primark
Hello! I’m sorry that things have been a bit quiet for a while but I have been super busy getting ready to move to Paris! I arrived on Wednesday and there have, of course, already been various difficulties but having lived here before, I expect this. Other than this, I am loving being reunited with my other half, (temporarily) living in Montmartre and pretending to be Parisienne.
This is what I wore today on a lovely stroll through the Jardin des Tuileries. I am obsessed with tartan at the moment and I picked up this fab oversized blazer at Beyond Retro near Brick Lane when I was last in London. These chelsea boots are nearly two years old and I haven’t worn them for ages but I’ve rediscovered them! I love it when that happens.
As entry to many museums on the first Sunday of the month is free, we then popped into Musée d’Orsay, which formerly was a rail station, to see some great pieces by Monet, Manet, Degas, Van Gough and Picasso.
As this is a new chapter to my life I thought it might be fun to change the blog up a bit! Of course I still adore fashion and being in the fashion capital of the world is only going to increase this but I am thinking of expanding the blog to a more general lifestyle blog, talking about great places to go in Paris and what I have been doing, as well as purely fashion based posts. This may also prompt a name change but I’m not sure. Let me know what you think!

Down by the River

Bristol Harbour Festival, or ‘Harbourside’ as it is generally known, is a free annual event based in the docks area of Bristol, which took place at the weekend. With a variety of musical, theatrical and circus shows as well as market stalls and boat trips, it really is a great event that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Unfortunately, the Saturday was rather wet. In fact it rained solidly from 3pm until way into the night so we spent most of the day in the pub and under an abandoned gazebo. Of course none of us had come that prepared so we had to fashion some waterproof gear out of bin bags. I know, so chic.

Sunday was much sunnier and I took advantage of this by visiting some of the boats and the market stalls. The outfit photos below were taken on board The Matthew which is a replica of the boat sailed by John Cabot from Bristol to Newfoundland in 15th century. It is a really pretty boat which resides in the Bristol Docks so I thought it was the perfect setting.

I can hardly stop wearing this dress at the moment. I know it’s quite a common item that everyone will have in different colours because it’s a Topshop basic but it is so easy to wear. I actually thought I would never wear orange, it being my least favourite colour, but I saw this and loved it. I wear it with lace cycling shorts just in case a gust of wind blows up my dress!
In the afternoon and evening I went to see some local bands play such as Peter & The Harmonics and a personal favourite of mine, Yes Rebels. I would highly recommend a trip down to Bristol for Harbourside next year if you want a weekend filled with lots of boats, lots of culture and as much local cider as you wish.

The Festival Season

Today it is the first of June and we all know what that means: Festival Season is officially and finally upon us. Glastonbury is THIS month and I cannot wait. My ticket was delivered last week and ever since then I have been mentally planning outfits. I thought it would be fun to do a short series of festival outfit ideas as well as providing a list of my essentials below, that way we can all share ideas and get excited together!

The Essentials

Over the knee socks – Topshop / Trainers – Converse / Hunter wellies / Bum bag – vintage / Raincoat – Kag in a Bag / Sunglasses – Rayban / Glastonbury Tote Bag

Festival fashion is all about balance: between looking good and being comfortable, and having been to quite a few festivals in my time, I know how demanding the festival environment can be on the body. So this year I have made two changes to my essentials list to improve my comfort and style. I have swapped my cheap Dunlop wellies for Hunters, and in a way I’m hoping for some rain so I will have the use of them! Only kidding (kind of) but they are so comfy! Definitely worth the investment. Also, I’ve purchased a bum bag to take over from my usual cross shoulder bag, which always gives me such shoulder ache.

Do you have any other tips for keeping comfortable and fashionable at festivals?

Look out for a few festival outfit posts coming up!

Dungarees – vintage / Shirt – vintage / Shoes – Converse
Just a quick post to show my outfit from an eventful bank holiday Monday on Coopers Hill in Gloucestershire, where hundreds of people quite literally throw themselves down a ridiculously steep hill racing after a rolling block of cheese.
In order to reach our viewing spot half way up the hill, we had to scramble up loose ground on all fours; grabbing whatever branches for support we could get our hands on. It is certainly not for the faint hearted! I clearly did not envisage this; or I would not have worn tights. Against all odds I managed not to snag them and the cute outfit risk paid off! Although next time, I think I will opt for jeans…

Art inspiration

One of the things that I love about fashion is how inspiration for styling, designs and outfits can be drawn from other subjects, such as literature, nature, music and art. Over the bank holiday weekend I visited some University friends in London where we went to the Lichtenstein exhibition at Tate Modern, which I had been dying to go to. Roy Lichtenstein was an American pop artist during the 1960s, known for his comic strip-like paintings. This exhibition was interesting because, although his famous works are fantastic, it enabled the public to see some of his less recognised pieces.

It is Lichtenstein’s celebrated unique style of using dots of varying sizes to create his images that have inspired today’s outfit choice. This playsuit exhibits the contrasting of colours, as well as the light and dark shades of blue used in his paintings for landscapes, water and the sky. Although Lichtenstein used many bold colours, pastels were essential too, as they are this spring in the fashion world. The playsuit has two different textures, which is also seen in Lichtenstein’s work, with his use of dots to create an illusion of colour alongside the bold blocks of colour and thick black lines. The polka dots depict his style and it is a pattern that should never go out of fashion.

Another way of combining pastels and Lichtenstein’s dots is on your nails. Just last week I painted L’Oréal’s black and white dotty top coat on top of a lovely pastel purple shade. It looks great and perfect for the spring weather that has finally arrived!
