The Highs & Lows Of Wearing White Jeans

After years of searching and a recent surge of high street versions that simply do not fit me, I have finally found a pair of white jeans. Imagine my joy when I popped into a local vintage shop to see a pair of white Levi’s 501 jeans in my size hanging out like a dream come true amongst the small selection of denim. So, I’m supposed to be on a spending ban but when the fashion gods land such a miracle right in your lap, it’s impossible to resist. As I said, I have been searching for the perfect white jeans for years – no exaggeration – so I was not about to walk away from a pair in the ultimate vintage cut of jeans and hence sentencing myself to more years of searching.

I must admit, when I first tried them on I was hesitant. There are so many reasons why one should not buy white jeans. Although they are easy to style, they are hard to wear - you have to know that it won’t rain or you won’t accidentally sit in something or spill tea down yourself, just to mention a few ways you might ruin your white jeans with a big, nasty stain. So wearing and buying white jeans is quite a commitment. Furthermore, for some reason, I think wearing white jeans takes some getting used to, especially if you not used to seeing your legs clad in such a bright and light colour. Even if they are perhaps only a tad lighter than your favourite blue jeans and even if the creases we are so used to appearing around our bum and crotch area in blue or black jeans are the same, somehow, white jeans look very different.

As I said, styling-wise, I think white jeans are so easy. Perhaps that is because I have had years of imagining what to wear with them or that I have always taken inspiration from people wearing white trousers. But yeah, white jeans are as simple to style as black jeans and just as an all black outfit can look awesome with the right accessories, so can an all white look, which is the base of today’s outfit. I’m wearing a simple white t-shirt tucked into the white Levi’s jeans and quite frankly I could have thrown on some old black Converse and been pretty happy with the outfit. But instead, I wanted to jazz up this all-white base with some blocks of my current favourite colours for spring/summer.

Let’s start with the shoes. I picked up these beautiful yellow platform espadrille sandals (woah, what a mouthful) last summer and I am still so obsessed. Espadrilles are having a real moment right now; they are all over my Instagram in varying styles and I am definitely looking into buying another pair before the summer is up. Yellow is also a big colour this season and together with the complimenting sand colour of the espadrille platform, these shoes look just perfect with the white jeans and white t-shirt combo - even more so than with blue jeans and a white t-shirt, which is how I first styled them last year.

The orange denim jacket and pink bag are recent vintage finds, which I have struggled somewhat to inject into my daily outfits, until now. The orange jacket looks so much better with white jeans than blue or black – although navy blue trousers have served as a nice alternative – and I think that is because of the more neutral base and the white stitching in the jacket. I really love this jacket – it’s so different to wear such a bright summer jacket rather than the usual blue one and I am hoping to find more ways to make it work in my wardrobe (suggestions on a postcard, or ya know, in the comments below).

Similarly to white jeans, this pink bag was a bit of a risk, being made of a fine silk fabric and having a beautiful wicker handle I haven’t wanted to wear it on rainy days. Furthermore, as this bag has to be carried either in hand or in the nook of the arm it makes it less practical than my usual choice of a backpack or cross body bag. Despite all this, the bag is so beautiful that couldn’t not buy it and although I had envisaged wearing it solely with monochrome outfits, I think it works really well with this clashing but complimentary blocks of yellow and orange.

I hope you like this bold but also quite simple outfit! Are you on the hunt for the perfect pair of white jeans? Check out my top high street picks below. Or perhaps you have been wearing white jeans for years? Let me know your highs and lows of wearing white jeans – I’d love to know! X

TWO PIECE: VINTAGE | SHOES: OLD ASOS (SIMILAR VIA CASTAÑER) | CLUTCH: VINTAGE | SUNGLASSES: VINTAGE (SIMILAR VIA MONKI)

It’s that time of year again – wedding season is a go and even though I don’t have a wedding to attend (actually I did last Friday but I couldn’t get the time off to go back to England), I wanted to share this alternative wedding guest outfit anyway. Because it is pretty bloody awesome, if I do say so myself! I think that weddings and summer occasion dressing in general are a great opportunity to get creative with styling and I will rise to the challenge every time to find something quirky yet still me. Last year, my alternative summer wedding outfit comprised of a simple Zara denim shirtdress, yellow espadrille platform sandals and a straw clutch bag, which I wore to Lewis’ sister’s wedding. I got so many compliments and felt super comfortable in the loose dress – meaning I could consume much more of the delicious food than my stomach could really handle! I’m certainly not knocking the usual dress and heels combo that we commonly think of for wedding guest attire but as I do not get to go to many fancy parties, I would want to go all out and wear something rather special.

As time goes on, I am becoming more and more obsessed with suits, co-ords and anything that matches, so much so that I have a Pinterest board totally dedicated to this kind of styling. What I love about a two-piece is how easy it is to look put-together but you don’t actually have to think too much about styling because most of it is done for you! Furthermore, I think jumpsuits and playsuits are also a great alternative for a wedding dress outfit but I struggle to find ones that fit (do I have an abnormally long body? – I don’t think so!) so if I can get that all-in-one look with the comfort of a co-ord then it’s a win in my eyes.

I think the shape of this two-piece is so flattering, much more so than it looked on the hanger. The top nips in slightly at the waist and then skims out over the hips, coming to the perfect length and in turn complimenting my hourglass shape. I also love the wide leg of the trousers – it looks great and makes the whole ensemble a bit more relaxed. Plus it covers all bases weather-wise, which is necessary if you live in an unpredictable climate like here in Montreal or are not counting on British summer time to bring good weather. Making trousers (or a jumpsuit) part of your wedding guest outfit gives that all important coverage if it happens to fall on a chillier day and the loose cut means you won’t get too hot if the sun does decide to shine. I do always like to be prepared for all weather eventualities.

Navy and white is a pretty easy colour palette to work with when it comes to accessorising this outfit. Due to my recent love for pairing primary colours, I chose yellow as my third key colour, although I think fuchsia pink, hot red or a complimenting pastel blue would look equally incredible. I wore these ASOS yellow sandals to a wedding last year and they were so comfy! In my eyes there is not point tottering around in a pair of painful shoes all day, especially when dancing could be involved. I am not good with heels because I hardly ever get the chance to practice wearing them, so if you are the same I would definitely recommend opting for platforms to give that height we all crave to make us feel “dressed up”. Espadrilles are all the rage right now and add a nice summer touch to any outfit. To keep with the matchy matchy theme, I finished off the look with my adorable yellow bead bag and some white-rimmed sunglasses. The clutch goes perfectly with the shoes and the round form of the sunglasses compliments to the spots, both adding more retro elements to the already vintage vibe.

T-SHIRT: SECONDHAND ZARA (SIMILAR LINKED) | TROUSERS: VINTAGE | SHOES: NIKE | WATCH: DANIEL WELLINGTON | SUNGLASSES: VINTAGE

I have just got back from a rather magical long weekend in New England where Lewis and I watched some great live music at Boston Calling, spent time with some of the most welcoming Americans I have ever met and, of course, did a lot of exploring. Every time we go on a trip, my appreciation for living abroad and lust for wandering grow even more and I am now mentally planning our next excursion, where it will be and when. Due to the lack of budget travel options here in North America, we have been embracing for the more time consuming yet more interesting option of driving to our chosen destination and therefore I have become rather practised in what to wear on a road trip. I think I have found the perfect road trip outfit and this is what I wore on both legs of the drive.

These photos were shot in the beautiful seaside town of Manchester-By-The-Sea, which I am sure you have all heard of because of the film (Casey Affleck scandal aside, I still absolutely adore this film). I am so glad we managed to take a trip to the coast – we had originally planned this for the way down but it pissed it down all day on Thursday (excuse my French). So, being just an hour north of Boston, we decided to spend a lovely Sunday morning in the picturesque Manchester-By-The-Sea, shooting these photos, exploring and lunching, before setting off on the long drive back to Montreal. I absolutely love how they came out. Even though I love urban shoot locations, it is always nice to switch things up, especially when the outfit works so well with the backdrop.

Dressing for travelling – especially something as long as an 8-hour road trip – always means wanting to be comfortable. Although it may be tempting to throw on leggings and an old shirt and be done with it, it can be possible to travel comfortably in style (I hate sentences like that but this is the essence of this post!). I recently picked up these navy blue cigarette trousers in a vintage shop and they are SO comfy. They fit my shape so well with their loose but not too loose leg shape and perfect high waist that they are as comfortable as wearing leggings! (Except if you eat too many car snacks and have to undo the top button, but that is my prerogative ;))

I paired them with this boxy, oversized stripe t-shirt, which is a second hand Zara find. I love how the tee hangs out over the very high waist of the trousers, creating a put together but casual look that still looks just as good when you arrive at your destination hours and hours after getting dressed. So even if you feel gross at least you will have an air of road trip chic.

Being still obsessed with red and blue together, I finished off the look with some red accents – my new red Nike Cortez and a red lip. These add a nice pop of colour to this rather blue outfit but more importantly (?) these trainers are so comfortable! They are perfect for wearing on a long road trip, for popping out of the car for any spontaneous roadside exploration – hiking in a national park or simply scoffing ice cream at the Ben & Jerry’s factory – and you’ll feel like you’re walking on sponge doing it. I also love the retro feel they bring to this outfit, which has a sixties French air about it (if I do say so myself), finished off like a dream with these super round white rimmed sunglasses – a slight alternative to the Kurt Cobain style ones that are currently splashed all over Instagram.

I really hope you have enjoyed this post – these are some of my favourite images we have shot in a while and it was so fun to bring fashion and travel together in one post to show you what I wear on a long American road trip. Happy travels!

An Untraditional Spring Outfit

JACKET: VINTAGE | SHIRT: OLD | TROUSERS: VINTAGE | SHOES: VINTAGE | BAG: c/o COACH

These photos were taken back in April, once the snow had melted and it is was finally possible to shoot proper outfit photos again. It felt so liberating to go out without a big coat and boots and finally wear these cute velvet loafers that had been saving ever since December to wear. With taking a month off blogging in March/April to give Fashion Et Moi a good makeover, I started shooting looks in advance in the hope of never being without photographic content and therefore reducing the stress side of blogging for me. But now I have been struggling to know what to write to accompany these photos because clearly I am wearing a rather untraditional spring outfit.

The forest green colour of the jacket and the deep burgundy running through the pattern in the trousers are certainly tones we would normally see in autumn but here I am rocking them in spring. Also, both the trousers and jacket are made of corduroy material, which is another reason that it is not very spring like. But the weather has not yet lent itself to midi skirts and denim jackets! Although there has been the odd nice day over the past month or so here in Montreal, it really has taken a while for spring to, well, spring and I feel my view of the seasons has been a bit askew because of the harsh winter I lived through. Bloody hell, I have been talking about the weather a lot but it's something I think about daily when making sartorial choices.

So let's talk about the outfit instead - that's what we're all here for, right? This look is made up of lots of vintage pieces, something that I used to feel bad including on here, because I can't put a link to the item, but now I am embracing it completely (I'm going to write a separate blog post about being pro-vintage in the blogging world). I have been loving this jacket recently, as you would have seen if you follow me on Instagram. I have always been a big fan of corduroy and its shape is really flattering, a bit oversized and boyish but not too much so. It goes really well with these amazing patterned velvet trousers. During winter, I realised that swapping jeans for some crazy patterned trousers was a great way of making a statement when you're stuck in the same winter coat for four months. I'm bringing this attitude into spring with me, as you may have seen in my recent outfit shot in Toronto's Distillery District - hello bright green pants!

An untraditional spring outfit

To keep this outfit fresh and more spring like, I teamed the trousers with this beloved white blouse of mine, which I'm sure you have seen many times before. It adds a touch of brightness and femininity amongst the deep colours and androgynous shapes of the jacket and trousers. I finished off the look with these gorgeous black velvet loafers, which as I said, I have been waiting to wear for months. Admittedly they are a little big but quite frankly I could not leave these beautifully pristine shoes in the shop - the pains of vintage shopping, eh? Finally, the Coach saddle bag (which seems to be the only bag to really feature on here, I'm working on my handbag collection, honest!) really ties this untraditional spring look together perfectly, with its rich maroon colour matching with that in the trousers' pattern and goes with the forest green colour so well.

I'm currently sat in a cafe finishing off this blog post on what will probably be Montreal's hottest day of the year so far. Talk about bad timing eh? I guess that's the problem with over-planning content - you learn, you learn. I hope you have enjoyed this untraditional spring outfit anyway 🙂

COAT: VINTAGE | SHIRT : ZARA | JEANS: VINTAGE LEVI'S 501 | SUNGLASSES: RAY BAN | SHOES: CONVERSE (old) SIMILAR & SIMILAR | SOCKS: ASOS

Coming from the European vibe of Montreal to Canada's biggest - and most American feeling - city, I knew in advance that I wanted to do a raw, urban street style shoot, like the kind of photos taken of show goers at New York Fashion Week. Unlike the other look from Toronto that I shared last week, where matching my outfit with the Distillery District was meticulously planned, all I wanted was a typical, American crossing with those iconic yellow traffic lights, for which these photos could really have been taken anywhere in the city.

I usually shoot in deserted back alleys or on quiet streets to appease my boyfriend (and photographer) so we can usually control what is going on in the background, take our time and not normally be interrupted (or stared at haha!). Lewis would describe these photos as very “cluttered” however I like the slapdash and spontaneous look of this shoot – the odd car or person walking in the background does not bother me – I hope you guys like it too.

The weather in Canada at this time of year is very unpredictable and although we were lucky enough to have wall-to-wall sunshine for our entire trip to Toronto, there were moments where a winter coat was still very much needed. Having bought it rather late in winter, I took the opportunity to wear my much-adored yellow coat, which goes perfectly with the traffic light and got numerous compliments over the weekend. With such a statement coat, I like to keep the base relatively simple so opted for jeans and a white shirt. However, this is no ordinary shirt. This ruffled beauty from Zara is the perfect cropped length at the front and has a lovely dropped hem at the back, which I find to be a very flattering shape and looks incredible billowing in the wind behind me.

With statement outerwear covered, the only way to finish off this relatively simple look was with some statement footwear. Enter these amazing pink glitter Converse, which I picked up back in December in a thrift store and have only been able to air now that Canada’s snow has melted. Paired with a fishnet sock, this is the perfect juxtaposition between a girly, princess shoe and grunge staple and adds another fun element to the outfit indeed.

Although I am sure you have enjoyed seeing another outfit featuring this yellow coat, which always proves very popular over on my Instagram, I hope to be sharing more and more spring/summer looks from now on.
