Oh, Fashion Week. It’s been a while old friend.
As I am sure you know, London Fashion Week has been taking place over the last five days and on Friday I popped down to The Strand bright and early to get some street style snaps for a blog post I had to write at work. If you’ve ever been to fashion week, you know that it’s totally normal to sucked into the “OMG, what am I going to wear” stress/excitement because there are so many factors to consider. Do I seek comfort in trainers or go for a (slight) heel to elevate the look? What’s the weather going to do? Do I need to plan my outfit around a coat for warmth or just risk it? Should I worry about trends or just go in what feels natural?
When I lived in Paris and would go to Paris Fashion Week as a freelance reporter, I would plan my outfits quite far in advance just to make sure there would not be any last minute hiccups. However, this year I only found out a few days beforehand that would be going down to London Fashion Week so it was a case of pulling an outfit together that considered the above factors but not to the extent of stressing me out.
CARDIGAN: ROKIT VINTAGE | FLARES: LEVI'S VIA ROKIT VINTAGE | TURTLENECK: VINTAGE | BOOTS: ROKIT VINTAGE | HAT: VINTAGE | BACKPACK: VINTAGE
So how did I put together my London Fashion Week outfit? To be honest, I just wanted to “do me”, without worrying about trends or what other people would be wearing and so I decided on a look that really reflects my style right now. Being highly influenced by sixties and seventies fashion, I knew that I just had to wear these uh-mazing 70s Levi’s flares that I got recently. They are a beautiful dark turquoise shade and being made from corduroy means I can finally get on the cord bandwagon.
I paired the cords with this incredible 60s fluffy cardigan that I had had on hold at work for ages. I figured London Fashion Week was the perfect time to air this statement jacket for the first time and the fact that its colour (almost) matches the cords shows that it was just meant to be. I broke up this tonal blocking with a contrast orange turtleneck, whose colour goes so well with the turquoise, adding more points to this retro look. On Friday morning I did get worried that I was going to be cold sans coat but I stuck to the plan, just layering a thermal top underneath the turtleneck for some extra warmth (oh, the glamour).
I finished off the look with some seventies-style accessories. These chunky black boots work really well with the bootleg shape of the flares and their slight heel was pretty comfortable for a morning on my feet. I chose to add the baker boy cap mainly to keep my hair (read: fringe) in check because let’s face it; no one wants windswept bad hair at London Fashion Week. Finally, I popped my essentials in this multicoloured suede mini backpack, which I hadn’t worn for ages.
So there we have it – “doing me” at London Fashion Week because sometimes nothing will make you feel better than dressing for no one else but you. X
