We live in a world of fast fashion. There is almost too much choice out there, both online and on the high street but in the past year I have bought barely any brand new clothes, relying almost solely on vintage shops to update my wardrobe. Don’t get me wrong – I love browsing the ASOS new in page as much as the next girl and it will be much easier to shop my favourite European brands again now I’m back in the UK, which I’m pretty happy about. However, vintage will always be my true love so accompanied by these awesome photos of me wearing this insane seventies two piece, I want to share why I love vintage clothing.
YOU WILL ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING UNIQUE
Now, this is something that has both pros and cons. I find nothing quite as thrilling as finding that perfect vintage gem, whether it is an item that I have been long searching for or something similar to current high street piece. I recently found a seventies blue vinyl coat for a mere $20, which actually made my heart race. I know the PVC/vinyl jacket trend isn’t going anywhere yet but mine will be utterly unique.
As a blogger, I am always striving to share interesting and different looks that have not just walked off the high street, to give you inspiration and a fresh approach towards styling. However, I know that some readers – and bloggers a like – distance themselves from vintage clothing because the exact look cannot be achieved in a simple click on a link. I think this is such a shame and it’s actually one of the main reasons that I am writing this post. I really do want to encourage you to not discount vintage just because you cannot instantly recreate it. Alternatively, take inspiration from a look – any look - whether that be the type of print, the cut or colour palette and use that to create your own unique outfit. That’s personal style and it’s so much more fun.
EVERY PIECE TELLS A STORY
Even though it may freak some people out, I absolutely love the fact that someone, sometimes decades ago, has already worn what I am wearing now. I imagine what they were doing when they wore it, how they styled it and who they were - there is something quite special about that! I envisage this red spotty two piece was worn with some incredible knee high white boots, a matching clutch and a big hair-do. We all know that trends come round and round again so why wear something that's made to look like it’s from the seventies when you could have the real deal?!
IT'S GREAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
I care about our world and if I can do my bit to help it last a little longer, then I’m going to do it. This is just one reason why I am opting for vintage clothing more and more – it’s great for the planet. One (wo)man’s trash is another (wo)man’s treasure right? So let’s not allow these gorgeous old pieces to end up in the actual trash and support our local vintage shops now. Although I like the idea of only buying second hand and vintage clothes, I never like to restrict myself when it comes to fashion, whether that be a particular style or shopping destination. However, I am being more conscious and it bloody well helps that I love vintage clothing anyway!
VINTAGE SHOPPING IS FUN & INSPIRATIONAL
I almost never vintage shop online because for me, the joy of vintage shopping is being in store. You can smell the old clothes (yes, I love that), feel the different fabrics and see all the colour and print clashes as items sit side by side on the rails. Even if you don’t buy anything, I think just being in a vintage shop can be inspirational. You might see a colour combination you gives you all the feels or find a style of clothing that you had never previously thought of, which in turn can help you approach your wardrobe differently. Also, the best vintage shop also have great décor, whether that be cosy corners with sofa on which to take a break from searching or random stuff hanging from the ceiling, you may even take inspiration from this – for your style or for your home! So give vintage shopping a try, you won’t regret it.
Finally let's chat about this outfit and what is the final summer look I'll be sharing on here this year, sob! This incredible vintage two piece ticks all the boxes - it's red, it's polka dot and it's oh-so seventies. It is also really flattering, being composed of a shirt that is just not long enough to wear on its own and a pair of hot pants, which you can just see thanks to the opening on the top. I finished off the look with those iconic silver Office boots from last year and my trusty Ray Ban round metals for all the retro vibes. I picked it up in the vintage shop I worked in in Montreal - I also bought two other sixties/seventies co-ords while working there, one of which you have already seen in my Alternative Wedding Guest Outfit post. I am a bit obsessed with sets right now - they are so easy and effortless to wear - and I guess the moral of this post is: if I had discounted vintage, I would be without this amazing two piece set in my life, which would be such a shame indeed.
I hope you have enjoyed reading about some of the reasons why I love vintage clothing. I am sure there are many more too and I would love to hear your thoughts - are you a retro queen or do you shy away from vintage? Let's chat! X
